Las posadas (the inns) are a celebration occurring during the novena leading up to Christmas (December 16-24). In México, friends and families will walk door to door re-enacting Mary & Joseph asking different innkeepers if they have vacancy for the night. This arrangement takes two songs that are commonly sung during this celebration and condenses the antiphonal verses for concert purposes.

Traditionally, during "En el nombre del cielo" one group stands inside a house's threshold or gate acting as the Innkeepers, while the second group stands outside as the Pilgrims. They antiphonally sing verses to each other asking and rejecting hospitality. "Entren, santos peregrinos" occurs once they find an innkeeper who allows the pilgrims to stay the night, and celebrates the arrival at a soft place to land.

Text

AFUERA

Translation

OUTSIDE
In the name of heaven, can we stay tonight at the inn?
We are tired from traveling, and my poor wife Mary is carrying!

We come exhausted from Nazareth.
I am a carpenter named Joseph.

INSIDE
I don't care who you are.
Leave me alone. Move along.

OUTSIDE
Don't be inhumane, show us charity. God will repay you,
Gentlemen, for your kindness. May the heavens fill you with happiness!

Do you have room at the inn, just for tonight?
Have mercy without reproach.

INSIDE
Are you Joseph and Mary?
Enter! I didn't recognize you.

ALL
Come in, holy pilgrims, welcome this humble home.
Although the house is humble, I give it to you from the heart!

Let's all sing with joy! Imagine–
Jesus, Joseph, and Mary have come to honor us.
