Las posadas (the inns) are a celebration occurring during the novena leading up to Christmas (December 16-24). In México, friends and families will walk door to door re-enacting Mary & Joseph asking different innkeepers if they have vacancy for the night. This arrangement takes two songs that are commonly sung during this celebration and condenses the antiphonal verses for concert purposes.
Traditionally, during "En el nombre del cielo" one group stands inside a house's threshold or gate acting as the Innkeepers, while the second group stands outside as the Pilgrims. They antiphonally sing verses to each other asking and rejecting hospitality. "Entren, santos peregrinos" occurs once they find an innkeeper who allows the pilgrims to stay the night, and celebrates the arrival at a soft place to land.
